Overview

From Blackbird and The Box in the 1980s, AMK and Huh!? in the 1990s, My Little Airport and Chochukmo in the 2000s and GDJYB and Stranded Whale in the 2010s, Hong Kong independent music has undergone major shifts and embraced a wide range of styles and genres.
In this talk, Stella Lau, former Programme Director in Performing Arts at HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education, explores the development of indie music in Hong Kong from the 1980s to the 2010s. The discussion reflects on the relationship between the local independent music scene and post-handover culture and social development in Hong Kong, as well as the influence of the independent music scenes in the US and Britain on Hong Kong indie music.
