Connie Chan Po-chu makes a major performance breakthrough, stepping into action mode as dao ma dan (female warrior role) in this grand widescreen action saga, while Tam Lan-hing put on white beard and heavy costume to cross-dress as the Tang general Ching Ngau-kam. The story of Tang Dynasty heroes Sit Ting-shan and Fan Lei-fa has been adapted to film numerous times, but this new Cantonese opera-style re-interpretation features brand-new arrangements in the songs and traditional gongs in the fight scenes. To please Connie Chan's loyal fan base, writer-director Fung Chi-kong even adds in two extra solo performances for Chan, giving the immensely popular superstar a chance to stretch her vocals. Using his preferred weapon of the stick, actor Yu Kai steals the spotlight as he shows off his martial arts prowess in the film's fight scenes.
