Not So Loud presents the world-première English-language staging of a play that has been wowing audiences in China for over three centuries. Ordained by Heaven, by Qing Dynasty playwright Li Yu, one of China’s finest comic dramatists, has a clown figure as its chief protagonist Que Li Hou. Hugely wealthy and hideously ugly, he wants a family to keep his dynastic bloodline going. So he needs a wife. Or two. Or three… The ensuing sex-and-marriage romp makes Feydeau look farcical as it straddles the gender gap and presses plenty of politically incorrect buttons on the way to its not-so-unhappy conclusion.
