Tseng Chien-Yun is currently a suona musician with the Hsinchu City Youth Chinese Orchestra of Taiwan. She completed the seven-year programme of Chinese music, majoring in suona, at the Tainan National University of the Arts and the Master degree programme of the Chinese Music Department at the National Taiwan University of Arts. She is currently receiving further training from Liu Chiang-Pin. Before that, she received training in Taiwan under Lin Wen-Chi, Tu Fung-Cheng, Lin Chi-You, Kuo Chin-Tsai and Sun Pei-Yuan. Tseng was the winner of the first prize and the Audience Award at the suona competition organized by the National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan in 2014.
In May 2014, Tseng was invited to perform with the National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan at the National Concert Hall in Taipei. Later in the year, she was invited to perform the suona concerto, Lion Dance in Taiwan, with the China Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra at the press conference announcing the ‘Xinyi Cup’ Chinese Orchestral Music Competition, held at the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing.
She also participated in the Second Handan Chinese Music Festival for Wind Instruments, held at the Yongnian Mingzhou Grand Theatre in Handan, Hebei Province, on which occasion she won the Best PerformanceAward with her interpretation of Three in Confrontation. In 2016, she made a recording of Lion Dance in Taiwan at the KHS Hall in New Taipei City; it was later included in the National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan’s double CD release of Listen to the Soundscape of Taiwan. More recently, Tseng gave a successful suona solo recital in October 2017.
