Overview

During the colonial times, the Hong Kong Police Force was ethnically diverse, formed by Europeans, Indians, local Chinese and the immigrants from Weihaiwei, Shandong. Since 1923, Weihaiwei was leased to the United Kingdom. As they did not speak Cantonese, the Weihaiwei-originated police officers formed a separate group.

Not accustomed to local food, they spent a part of their salaries to hire Shandong cooks to take care of their daily meals, so they could reminisce about home through familiar noodles, dumplings, da bao (large buns) and various leek dishes.

Retired Weihaiwei police officer Charles Ng will be in dialogue with Professor Lau Chi Pang, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Built Heritage Conservation, discussing the lunch of Weihaiwei police officers at the Central Police Station in the old days.

All participants will enjoy an authentic Shandong lunch set.
