Spanish-American conductor François López-Ferrer presents two popular works from 20th century Russian composers in his second programme with the HK Phil. At the heart of the concert is Rachmaninov’s darkly romantic Second Concerto, performed by renowned pianist Niu Niu. Concluding the programme is Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony, a light and frivolous expression of simple happiness. This enthralling evening opens with the Asian premiere of a work written last year by Korean composer Unsuk Chin’s Subito con Forza, inspired by a comment made by Beethoven – “Major and minor. I am a winner.”
