ITALIA MIA Festival "The Other Side of Dolce Vita: Pier Paolo Pasolini with Tazio Secchiaroli in the locations of Accattone"Istituto Italiano di Cultura Hong Kong

In 1958, Federico Fellini met and asked Tazio Secchiaroli about his stories of paparazzi photographers which eventually became scenes of the masterpiece La Dolce Vita (1960). Two years later, Pier Paolo Pasolini was about to shoot his first feature film. Under Fellini’s suggestion, Pasolini invited Secchiaroli to join him to venture just a few kilometres away from the lights of Via Veneto and into another sobering reality. The pair took glimpses of the Roman villages, and the children, women and a few men in the empty streets, creating a reportage of over 150 photographs. The collection becomes not merely locational research, but also evidence of a social reality lesser known and a counterpoint to the glittering and glamorous life of the sweet nightlife of Rome.

Curated by Giovanna Bertelli,the exhibition brings together two sides of Rome by juxtaposing mostly unpublished works from the reportage, with Secchiaroli’s best-known photographs in Via Veneto.
