Overview

In a farewell poem to relatives and friends, the famous Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi (772-846) lamented that he had a shifting life, and to him home would be where his heart could feel at ease.

In the long history of China, dynastic changes, foreign invasions, human and natural disasters, official and military postings, all drove the people on migrations. They brought with them fond memories of their home towns and eternal respect for their ancestors.

Major migration waves were generally from the north. At a time when transportation means were not well developed, their eventual arrival at coastal regions of Chao Zhou, Shan Tou or Hong Kong marked the end of their tortuous journey. Facing different lifestyles and survival environment they had to cultivate a harmonious co-existence with different ethnic groups. Elders of Chao Zhou were remarkably adventurous. They taught their younger generations Heroic Dance to build up a strong physique and to strengthen ethnic unity in new environments. They would feel at home with the blessing of Tin Hau ( Heavenly Queen ) wherever they migrate.

“Turbulent Waves” is another major production since “Dunhuang Reflections”. Featuring Hong Kong intangible cultural heritage items of Heroic Dance and Tin Hau worship, the grand dance drama is more earthly on the struggle of migrants to Hong Kong.
