In ancient China, decorating the house with carefully selected flowers and using flowers as offerings were forms of entertainment for the literati. On the first day of the Lunar New year, the literati would fill their tables with flowers and fruits so that they can start the new year with a clean slate, and welcome its arrival. This time, in Chui Pui-Chee‘s solo，he takes on the theme of New Year Qinggong, and turns the space into his personal study. In continuing the literati culture with a personal touch, Chui reinterprets the traditional Qinggong paintings and presents a series entirely composed of new works.
We not only showcases Master Chui’s exquisite painting techniques but also highlights his meticulous study of Yuan Hung-dao‘s masterpiece, “Ping Shi.“ He not only places importance on the selection of flowers used in his paintings, but also on what they are contained in. He made reference to the vases from the Palace Museum, which have elegant color tones and ”an hua“ patterns, known for their subtle, thin, and nearly invisible designs, offsetting the beauty of the flowers. From flowers and vases packed with literary allusions, to its environment, Chui demonstrates refinement and sophistication, and all elements are seamlessly integrated into this space.
