Open the Box 2025: Bloom of Light is a durational spectator-led programme created by Japanese artist Shinji Ohmaki that invites audiences of all ages to weave their memories into the artwork by letting flower motifs and patterns spread through the gallery space.
Bloom of Light is part of the artist’s ongoing Echoes Infinity series, an installation that explores memory, time, and the creation of light in collaboration with the audience.
Through workshops, participants will create floral patterns to build an ever-growing shared space with different cultural perspectives on identity and meaning that transform into collective light: the light each carries within and that blooms through encounter.
On Open the Box
Open the Box is an innovative programme taking place every summer at Tai Kwun Contemporary, aiming to explore alternative and innovative approaches to community engagement and shape the future of museums. Gallery and white cube spaces are typically platforms for curators' and artists' creativity. But during this special event, the roles will be reversed—the gallery will feature collective works created by artists, visitors and participants.

● The programme welcomes audiences aged five or above to participate.
● Admission tickets are required for Co-creation period. Tickets can only be purchased at art-mate, with limited daily quotas on a first come, first served basis.
● Ticket sale ends 90 minutes after the start of each session. Latecomers after 30 minutes will not be admitted.
● Participants will be given priority to attend the closing ceremony on 3 August.
● Comfortable clothing is recommended.
● Participants will be required to take off their shoes before entering the designated activity area.
● Materials may cause staining, and socks will be provided for participants.
● The workshop utilises fine particulate matter. Individuals with respiratory sensitivities or related health concerns should take this into account before registering.
