Ng Yau

Ng Yau (Yau Yau) is an eleven-year-old ardent cellist who appears actively as soloist and orchestral player. Born and raised in Hong Kong, China, Yau Yau embarked on his musical journey at the age of five, learning classical music on the piano with his amateur pianist parents. He started learning the cello with Ms Beatrice Lee Ha-yan when he was seven and is currently under the tutelage of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) cellist Ms Anna Kwan Ton-an. At the age of eight, Yau Yau achieved Distinctions for both cello and piano in ABRSM Grade 8and was awarded music scholarships from the Diocesan Boys’ School Primary Division (DBSPD). He attained Trinity ATCL Cello diploma with distinction when he just turned ten. He attended the masterclasses of Cellist Prof. Jian Wang, Prof. Claudio Bohórquez, Prof. Pierre Doumenge, Ms Nayoung Baek, Ms Yeonjin Kim, Violinist Mr Michael Brooks Reid, Mr Ciaran McCabe, Ms Charlotte Scott, Ms Emma Parker, Violist Prof Wing Ho and Mr Joel Hunter.

Yau Yau has been actively participating in various music festivals and competitions. Yau Yau was invited to perform as a soloist of “Young Talent Series” in the Joy of Music Festival 2024 by the Chopin Society of Hong Kong. He was rewarded a long thread of noteworthy awards, including 2nd Place in both the Cello Concerto Class and the Cello Sonata Class as the youngest winner across two classes at the Hong Kong School Music Festivals, First Place Awards in both Cello Diploma Class and Children Class at the international round of the Hong Kong International Youth Performance Arts Festival, First Place in the Scholarship Class of the Hong Kong Promotion of Performing Arts Association competition, Gold Award in the Cello Diploma Class at the Joint School Music Competition, amongst many other.

Yau Yau is an avid orchestral player committed to collaborate with renowned conductors and musicians Maestro Christoph Eschenbach, NY Phil Concertmaster Frank Hung, Cellist Na-Young Baek, Dr Joseph Kam Ho-pang, Mr Homer Lee Siu-lam, Mr Andrew Ling Hin-yau, Mr. Jeremy Williams, Ms Jing Huan, Ms Sophie Mok Sze-ki, and Mr Chu Siu-wai, to name but a few. He performed as Principal Cellist with the acclaimed Maestro Christoph Eschenbach in “Share the Stage with the HK Phil” in November 2024. Since the age of nine, Yau Yau has been the Principal Cellist of DBSPD Senior Symphony Orchestra, String Orchestra and Chinese Orchestra. In the same year, Yau Yau served as the Associate Principal Cellist in the Music Office Junior Symphony Orchestra. From Season 2023/24 onward, he became the youngest cellist in the Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra and played as the Associate Principal Cellist in the Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra Annual Concert and Music Office 45+ Anniversary Gala. He also performed in GBA Youth Spectacular, Asian Youth Orchestra Hong Kong Music Summer Orchestra, Hong Kong Youth Music Camp serving as the Principal Cellist, and joined HKGNA Young Virtuosi as the youngest cellist.
