'Calligraphy is everywhere in our daily lives.' From the 1930s to the 1990s, calligraphy permeated everyday life in Hong Kong in a myriad of forms, appearing on signs, movie posters, advertisements, and business cards. It has long been woven into our collective aesthetic sensibility.
This exhibition showcases the rich tradition of applied calligraphy in Hong Kong through a dynamic mix of experiences, including multimedia displays, innovative printmaking techniques and interactive designs. It invites visitors to reflect anew on the significance of calligraphic art in everyday life, and to explore its future possibilities and adaptability. Visitors can also create their own postcards featuring unique Hong Kong calligraphy stamps, making for a meaningful souvenir to take home.

One of the major highlights of this exhibition is the debut of kinetic LED screen installations in Hong Kong. Artists Fa Fa (Fafa) and Desmond Lo, in collaboration with curator Westley Wong, have jointly created two unique motion-based LED animations using calligraphic materials drawn from the @ink.brush.city Visual Archive. These works deliver an unprecedented sensory experience of calligraphy to airport visitors at scheduled intervals.
Leading the showcase is 'Calligraphy in Motion' by Fafa. The visual content is sourced from diverse everyday sites across Hong Kong, including historic landmarks in Sheung Wan, public housing estates, and local temples. Synchronised with original soundscapes, the calligraphy animates rhythmically, offering a contemporary reinterpretation of the plasticity of this traditional art form.
Following this is 'MIRAGE' by Desmond, a slower-paced piece that invites viewers to contemplate the iconic cityscapes of 20th-century Hong Kong. The work draws from archival photographs spanning several decades, allowing audiences to observe the evolution of the city's urban image through shifts in architectural composition, typographic styles, and sign-making materials. Together, these elements prompt reflection on the indispensable role of art in shaping everyday urban life.
