Ruth Yuen | Educational Artist • Creative Producer • Musical Theatre Advocate

Ruth is a Hong Kong-based educational artist and creative producer, specializing in using musical theatre and performing arts as a bridge to connect education, language, and community. She holds an MA in Musical Theatre Studies from Temple University, USA, and a BA in English from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her diverse academic background forms the foundation of her interdisciplinary creative work.

Her career began as a secondary school English teacher. Driven by a firm belief in the power of stage and literature to inspire, she pursued further studies in the United States, focusing her research on how to use musical theatre to revitalize literature education. This philosophy unifies all her professional endeavors:

In Education: She founded Spotlight Academy in 2019, designing tailored performing arts curricula and annual productions for multiple schools. She also serves as a speaker for the LCSD's "Musical 101" program, introducing theatrical arts to primary and secondary students.
In English Teaching: During the pandemic, she became one of the top tutors on AmazingTalker in Hong Kong. The "Adult English: Lesson Two" series she founded helps adults regain confidence in learning English through a unique cultural lens.

In Performing Arts Industry Production: In 2023, she was invited to join the arts group "Musical Trio" as Executive Director, overseeing productions and founding "Trio's newsletter" to deepen audience education. Her producing credits include works such as "Our Love Stories, a musical reading", "Rooftop Rhapsody", "Let's Hear: The Jazz Winds of Haruki", and ""LOVE/SICK by John Cariani", demonstrating her ability to handle diverse themes.

Looking ahead, she will contribute as an Assistant Producer to the inaugural Hong Kong "MusicalCon" in 2026, continuing her commitment to enriching the local performing arts landscape.

Her artistic philosophy extends into her personal life journey: In 2025, she co-created a widely recognized "Musical Theatre Wedding" with musical theatre creator EK Wong Yee-Lai. They rewrote lyrics and rearranged multiple classic musical theatre songs into a medley that narrated their own growth and love story, enlisting musician and actor friends to bring it to life. The Reels series from this wedding amassed over 500,000 views on Instagram, becoming an ultimate embodiment of her belief that "art originates from life."
