Charles Yik Kiu Lin recently attained distinction on graduation of Master of Music at the Academy of Performing Arts, Hong Kong, under the tutelage of Mr Andrew Ling, the Principal Violist of Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Lin obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Viola performance in 2022 under the guidance of James Sleigh, at the Royal Academy of Music, London. Lin also acquired a teaching licentiate certificate from the same institution. Lin's journey with the viola began at the age of 6 under the tutelage of Mr. Ray Tsoi, where he started his junior music programme at the Academy of Performing Arts, Hong Kong.
Lin has had the privilege to play under the Baton of Semyon Bychkov, Robert Trevino, Dinis Sousa, John Wilson, Lio Kuok Man, Wing-Sie Yip and more. Lin is an active freelance member in numerous orchestras, including Opera Hong Kong Orchestra, Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, Inheritage Philharmonic, Cantabile, Gustav Mahler Orchestra etc.
As a soloist and chamber musician, Lin has performed in masterclasses held by James Ehnes, Timothy Ridout, Amihai Grosz, Steven Tenenbom, Ida Kavafian, Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt, Martin Outram, Chilingirian Quartet, Lincoln Centre Chamber Music Society and more. His performances have taken place in famous venues including St. James Piccadilly Church, Royal Festival Hall, John F. Kennedy Hall, Zhuhai Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Hong Kong City Hall, Hong Kong Museum of Arts. Lin also had the opportunity to record a CD tribute to HKAPA 40th Anniversary with Mr. Da-Hong Seetoo, multiple Grammy award winner for classical producer, alongside his sextet members playing Brahms and Schoenberg. During the summer of 2024, Lin participated in Meadowmount Music Festival in the U.S. studying with Caroline Coade and Ayane Kozasa. His chamber group won the playoffs and performed in a livestream of "the violin channel"
As a music educator, Lin is a part-time Viola Teacher at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Music Office and a Strings coach at the Diocesan Boys' School. Lin is now based in Hong Kong where he continues to reach out for more performing and music education opportunities.
