British writer Martin Booth (1944-2004) remembered fondly his childhood days in HK in his memoir "Gweilo". Martin came to HK with his parents when his father became a grocery provider for the Royal Navy. The family was first put up in the Fourseas Hotel on Waterloo Road. The boy was definitely adventurous and explored extensively the neighbourhood near his lodging, especially the dai pai dongs and small shops in the area. Consequently, a vivid Yau Ma Tei of the mid-1940s was recorded in his memoir. The book received great reviews for its humour when published, and had been adapted as a one-man musical and thrice staged locally.
Guided tour of Yau Ma Tei focusing on the stories related in the memoir. Places to be visited will include the old Fourseas Hotel site, Waterloo Hill, typhoon shelter and Tin Hou
