A play by Oscar Wilde
Directed by Jodi Gilchrist
Oscar Wilde's comedic masterpiece tells the story of two gentlemen, Jack and Algernon, who each live a double-life, creating elaborate deceptions as well as a fictional personas called "Ernest" to escape social obligations or court women.
When Jack falls in love with Algernon's cousin, Gwendolen, he is determined to come clean, but when Gwendolen reveals she can only love a man named Ernest, it somewhat complicates things.
When Algernon decides to visit Jack's ward, Cecily, while posing as "Ernest," the situation gets entirely more complicated! Hijinks ensue, and the two gentlemen and their ladies are in for more than they ever anticipated when formidable Lady Bracknell, Gwendolen's mother, begins sleuthing around.
Throw in a country vicar, an ineffective governess, two incompetent butlers, enough muffins and cucumber sandwiches to fill a large handbag, this brilliant comedy delightfully captures everyone's struggle to conform to society's expectations while trying love who they wish, and live how they want.
