The upcoming performance by the Asiartic Camerata presents a dialogue across time, geography, and personal history. The performance is anchored by a dialogue between two works separated by over a century, yet bound by a shared geography of the heart.
The concert features Alexander Borodin's String Quartet No. 2 in D Major, a work celebrated for its lyrical intensity and deeply personal origins. Composed in 1881 as a gift for his wife, Ekaterina Protopopova, the quartet serves as a musical memoir of their early months together in Heidelberg.
Its famous Notturno movement captures a sense of enduring affection, weaving a narrative of nostalgia that has remained a cornerstone of the chamber music repertoire for over a century.
In an intimate mirror to Borodin's tribute, the program features the Asian premiere of Carlos BritoDias's work "cuevas" for string quartet. Originally commissioned by the Festival Internacional de Música de Sorbas, Almeria (FIMSAL), the piece is a sonic architecture inspired by the tranquil ambience and resonant acoustics of the Caves of Sorbas, Spain. It translates the tranquil, resonant acoustics of these subterranean spaces, echoing the natural soundscapes of these ancient geological formations. Beyond the physical inspiration of the Sorbas caves, "cuevas" is a deeply personal dedication to the composer's wife, marking their first wedding anniversary. The work intentionally interlaces thematic nods to Borodin's second quartet, bridging the landscape of Heidelberg with the ancient Spanish caves. For the composer, Heidelberg represents a shared beginning, the destination of his and his wife's first journey together, just as it did for Borodin and Ekaterina.
The Asian premiere of 'cuevas' carries a unique spatial history; the work was originally debuted within the natural galleries of the Sorbas caves themselves. This performance serves as a deliberate recreation of that foundational experience, as Asiartic Camerata's soloist "transport" the audience to the primal, subterranean atmosphere of Almería within the contemporary concert hall. By bringing these two worlds to the Fringe Club, the ensemble invites the Hong Kong audience to experience a "sensory counterpoint", where the traditional concert hall is transformed into a living dialogue between European heritage and the evocative stillness of the earth's hidden spaces.
Presented by the Asiartic Camerata in collaboration with the Green Music Foundation, this concert marks a significant milestone in the ensemble's mission of cultural exchange, bringing European chamber traditions and contemporary premieres to the heart of the regional arts scene.
This is an immersive chamber music experience that seeks to dissolve the walls of the Fringe Club and transport the listener to the subterranean landscapes of Almería, Spain.
