Overview

Echoing the concert programmes and further elevating the theme of the Prison Yard Festival, Tai Kwun presents an exquisite selection of classic films and new releases that address the healing power of music.
The programme features two major musical films that are rarely shown in Hong Kong. Thirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould (1993) captures the episodes of eccentric pianist Glenn Gould – an artist who shook the world with his legendary recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations; while Tous les matins du monde (1991) tells the story of Baroque composer Marin Marais with an award-winning soundtrack by viol master Jordi Savall.

Meanwhile, two recent releases, Max Richter’s Sleep (2019) and the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s Tabula Rasa (2021) will also be shown. Each film will portray the most significant musical achievements of composers’ Max Richter and Arvo Pärt. This is music which offers the listener consolation and each film sensitively brings a visual dimension which deepens the impact of the music.

In Falling for Stradivari (2021), the peerlessly brilliant violinist Janine Jansen discovers how 12 different violins, built in the early 18th Century by history’s greatest craftsman Antonio Stradivari, open up fresh and unexpected sound worlds for a performing artists in the 21st Century.
