Hiromi Shigeno was born in Japan and is currently based in Germany. After receiving her bachelor's degree from Tokyo Gakugei University, she continued her musical studies at the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo, where she studied marimba with the renowned marimbist Professor Keiko Abe, one of the most influential figures in the development of modern marimba performance. During this period, she developed a strong artistic foundation and a deep interest in exploring the expressive possibilities of
the marimba.

Since 2009, Hiromi Shigeno has been living in Germany, where she further developed her artistic profile and continued her percussion studies with Professor Isao Nakamura. Her artistic work has since evolved within an international context, combining concert performance, chamber music, and pedagogical activity.
As a performer, Hiromi Shigeno focuses primarily on the marimba and appears in a wide range of concert settings, including solo recitals, chamber music performances, and orchestral projects. Her repertoire encompasses both established works and contemporary compositions, reflecting a particular interest in presenting the marimba in diverse musical contexts and highlighting the expressive possibilities of the instrument.

In addition to her work as a marimbist, she is also active as a percussionist in various
musical settings.

Pedagogical work also forms an important part of her artistic activity. For twelve years she taught marimba at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe in Germany. During this time, she worked with students from a variety of musical and cultural backgrounds, supporting their technical and artistic development while sharing her experience as an internationally active performer.

Hiromi Shigeno is a prizewinner at several international marimba competitions, including the Keiko Abe Prize at the 5th World Marimba Competition in Stuttgart, Germany, in 2008. Alongside her solo work, chamber music plays an increasingly important role in her artistic activities. Since 2023, she has been active in a marimba duo project exploring new repertoire and collaborative possibilities. In 2025, she founded the oboe–marimba ensemble Duo Tonali. The ensemble focuses on the distinctive tonal combination of oboe and marimba and is dedicated to expanding the repertoire for this instrumentation.
To date, the ensemble has presented three world premieres.

Hiromi Shigeno also maintains an active international concert schedule. In 2026, she has been invited to Brazil and Argentina for concerts and masterclasses. They will take place at the Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro – Instituto Villa-Lobos in Brazil, as well as at the National University of the Arts, the Astor Piazzolla Music Conservatory, and the San Martín Conservatory in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Further international engagements are planned, including a concert in Hong Kong in August 2026, as well as a scheduled appearance as soloist in a double concerto in October 2026.

Through her work as a performer, chamber musician, and educator, Hiromi Shigeno continues to contribute to the international marimba community and to the ongoing development of contemporary percussion performance.
