Michael Chan

Michael Chan is a jazz guitarist from Hong Kong.

Michael first came in contact with Hong Kong’s jazz scene in 2018 under the Fringe Club’s jazz mentorship programme, “Jazz Go Central Jazz Go Fringe”, having the chance to organise jazz events and familiarise himself with many of the local giants.

As a guitarist, Michael studied under the jazz education programme of the Hong Kong Youth Jazz Collective for three consecutive years from 2019 to 2022, and was taught by various tutors including Lui Ngao Yuen, Patrick Lui, Joyce Cheung, Scott Murphy, Samuel Chan, as well as Bowen Li and Dean Li. In parallel, he also participated in workshops of Ensemble Transience led by Ted Lo and Teriver Cheung from 2020 to 2021.

Determined to advance his musicality and technique, Michael is coached under the supervision of local guitarist Tsui Chin Hung under private lessons. As a way to advance his traditional chops, lessons were also taken under the supervision of local guitarist Brian Mok.

Michael is the member of the newly formed 7th Wave Septet led by Eason Chan, and also the free improv music group Fountain Collective, and the local independent indie band Bad Math. Michael performed in various occasions including in Lost Star Livehouse Bar & Eatery, HKYJC showcases, Innonation Production Livestreams, Emax Music Zone and various small-scale jazz gigs in Hong Kong.

As a keen promoter of the local jazz scene, Michael worked for West Kowloon Cultural District as a creative coordinator in organising the Freespace Jazz Fest for three consecutive years (2019-2021). In 2021, he co-founded local jazz activist group Fountain de Chopin and is determined to contribute in fostering the local jazz community with his peers.

Michael is also a facilitator for beginner’s jazz education. He engaged in hosting a three-month long beginner’s guitar class organised by the “18dART” community music programme in Sha Tin in summer 2021.
