David Francis Urrows is a historical musicologist and composer. From 1989 to 2018 he taught at Hong Kong Baptist University, where he founded The Pipe Organ in China Project (www.organcn.org) and directed the MA in Music program. He has also held teaching positions at the University of Massachusetts, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and Eastern Mediterranean University.
Urrows is the editor of the critical edition of the works of Otto Dresel (1826-1890), and of three volumes of the Word and Music Studies series. He has contributed to leading music encyclopaedias including Grove Music Online, and has published numerous journal articles and book chapters. His compositions and scholarly editions have appeared with Boosey & Hawkes, Paraclete Press, and E.C. Schirmer.
In addition to his academic work, Urrows has been a broadcaster on RTHK, presenting series on J.S. Bach and César Franck. His most recent book, François Ravary SJ and a Sino-European Musical Culture in Nineteenth-Century Shanghai, was published in 2021. In 2022 and 2023, he served as guest conductor of the Hong Kong choral ensemble, Vox Antiqua.
