Johnny Howard

For the last fifteen years, Johnny has been one of the world's most sought-after choral singers, and is delighted to have been both one of Tenebrae's regular basses, and also the group's North American manager, since the start of 2025. Between 2010 and 2024, as the bass and Creative Director of the multi-Grammy-Award-winning vocal ensemble, The King's Singers, Johnny performed more than 1,400 concerts in over 60 countries across the globe. He feels incredibly lucky to have performed on almost all of the world's most prestigious stages, including New York's Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Sydney Opera House and the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing, as well as appearing regularly in venues across Hong Kong. Under his creative guidance, The King's Singers were inducted into Gramophone magazine's Hall of Fame, invited to perform an NPR Music Tiny Desk concert, and commissioned over thirty new pieces of music, from composers including Joe Hisaishi, Eric Whitacre and Judith Bingham. He recorded over 30 albums with The King's Singers, including Gold, which celebrated the group's 50th anniversary and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2019. Over the course of his career, he has taught thousands of choral singers across the world, through workshops, extended residencies and Summer Schools. As a soloist, Johnny is passionately working with composers to create a new songbook designed specifically for bass voices.

In late 2024, Johnny founded Classical Not Boring: an educational and artistic movement designed to teach the how and why of building connection - with our audiences, with our music and with ourselves - to the classical music industry. His ultimate goal is to make sure that we always create programmes, perform our music, and live our lives as artists in a way that maximises the impact our music can have on our audiences. He currently teaches at The Royal College of Music in London, Sinfonia Smith Square, the University of Southern California and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, with more international residencies planned for 2026/27 and beyond.

Aside from singing and teaching, Johnny is the Head of Programming for the international annual Classical Pride festival, sits on the board of the London Gay Men's Chorus, and is working with Classic FM, the world's biggest classical music radio station, to create and host a podcast celebrating the most authentic, human and playful sides of classical musicians.

Finally, Johnny is absolutely thrilled to be returning to Hong Kong this Summer: to work with NOEMA again, to visit friends, and to eat as much dim sum as possible. Do1 ze6 saai3 nei5 dei6 ge3 yau5sam1 jing2cing2!
