Jonathan Weigle is a distinguished cellist known for his success as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestra player on international stages. Since 2015, he has been the principal cellist of the Cologne Chamber Orchestra and frequently serves in the same role with several prestigious orchestras, including the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra London. He has also appeared as a guest with renowned ensembles such as the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
His passion for chamber music has been a significant part of his artistic journey. Alongside his cello studies in Berlin, he pursued chamber music studies in Madrid. He collaborates with notable musicians and ensembles, including the Armida Quartet and the SOTA Piano Trio. Weigle has received awards for his duet performances and contemporary music interpretation, and he has performed as a soloist in prestigious music festivals and with new music ensembles.
Born into a musical family in Berlin, Weigle began playing the cello at five years old and joined the Junge Philharmonie Brandenburg as a teenager. Committed to fostering musical education for young people, he has taught and led workshops internationally, including in India and China. During the pandemic, he adapted by organizing live-stream concerts and performing Beethoven's cello sonatas virtually with pianist Ben Cruchley. His dedication to both performance and education marks his impactful career in the classical music world.
