Peta Lily

This award-winning performer/theater-maker is well known for her solo career with well-reviewed shows, including Wendy Darling, Beg, Topless, Midriff, Invocation and her current touring show, Chastity Belt. She also worked with the David Glass Ensemble (Whale and Gormenghast) and Claire Dowie (All Over Lovely), touring the UK, Hong Kong, Australia and Europe.
She trained with Jacques Le Coq, Philippe Gaulier, Monika Pagneux, Theatre du Mouvement, Yoshi Oida, Carlo Bosso (Commedia dell’Arte), Sankai Juku and Natsu Nakajima (Butoh Dance), and Mike Alfreds (Theatre Direction).
Lily teaches theatre courses, including You’re On – write yourself onstage; Comedy Toolbox; Clown and Dark Clown. She teaches at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Circus Space (NCCA), Mountview Theatre School and The Actor’s Centre. She has also taught at the École Philippe Gaulier, the Guildford School of Drama and the ArtsEd School of Acting, London. She serves as Auditions Chair at RCSSD.

As a director, her works include Rough Magic for LCF at Wilton’s Music Hall, Rhythm Town for Juggling on Tap, La Poule Plombee for Sarah-Louise Young, Cabaret from the Shadows for Teatro Pomodoro, Loneliness Street Cabaret for Beautiful Mess Theatre, Blushed for Sole Rebel Tap, Hamlet or Die at the Hong Kong Fringe, The Maids, Low in the Dark and Bertolt for Tryfus and Meta in Portugal, and About the Oranges for Robbie Gringras, Israel. She was movement director for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead at the Library Theatre, Manchester. She directed Strange Forces and everyday everyday at NCCA. She directed Dark Dates at the TBT Firsts Festival 2015.

She has written three plays: The Porter’s Daughter (Cockpit Theatre and NTC tour), Blame (Teatro Mechanis, Athens) and Random Oracle (Unity Theatre, Liverpool). She recently worked as creative mentor with John-Paul Zaccarini on his Circo-Analysis Project, as Dark Clown consultant for Acrojou’s Wake and also for Jammy Voo’s Birdhouse.

Peta pioneers research in the concept of “Dark Clown”. Her paper, The Comedy of Terrors – Dark Clown & Enforced Performance, was delivered at the Bath Spa University. Jon Davison discusses her Dark Clown work in his book, Clown - a reader in theatre practice (Palgrave MacMillan).
