Bharatanatyam dance coach
Sandhya Gopal is a passionate Indian classical dancer who has made Hong Kong her home since 1987. Raised in India, she began her Bharathanatyam training at the tender age of six under the guidance of her esteemed Guru, Mrs. Jayalaxmi Narayan. In 1997, Sandhya realised her dream of sharing the beauty of this art form with the Hong Kong community and established the Natya Shikara Indian classical dance school. Since then, she has nurtured the talents of over 50 students, witnessing their incredible growth as they completed their Arangetram (formal dance debut) on the Natya Shikara stage.
Originating from the culturally rich state of Tamil Nadu in South India, Bharathanatyam carries a legacy spanning 2,000 years.
The Sanskrit epic Mahabharata, from which the Bhagawad Gita stems, is often brought to life on stage via the medium of dance and Bharathanatyam. Sandhya, having immersed herself in these timeless stories during her teenage years, brings her own flair to the performance, having even portrayed the beloved character of Krishna in a production of the Mahabharata during her secondary school days. Now, she is excited to see the Bhagawad Gita unfold on a Hong Kong stage, where the spirit of this great Indian legend is sure to enthrall audiences in a breathtaking display of grace and expression.
