Lee Meng-hsueh

Lee Meng-hsueh is currently Yangqin Principal with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. Born in Taichung, Taiwan, she first received music training at the Chinese music class of the Taichung Municipal Guang Fu Elementary School, followed by the music class of the Taichung Municipal Shuang Shih Junior High School and the seven-year system programme at the Chinese Music Department of the Tainan National University of the Arts (TNNUA), majoring in yangqin under Hsieh Chung-Hsin. She graduated from the TNNUA with a Master’s degree cum laude in 2013. During her studies, she was a multiple scholarship holder for consecutive years, being awarded for her outstanding academic performance.

Lee came first in the Adult Section of the Instrumental Competition of the Chinese Music Association of Taiwan in 2010, and won the Popularity Award in the Taipei Chinese Instrumental International Yangqin Competition organized by the Taipei Chinese Orchestra in 2014. She was a former member of the Taiwan Yan-Qin Orchestra, a yangqin instructor at the Chang Hua Arts Senior High School, and a guest member of the Taipei Chinese Orchestra for their subscription concert seasons. She joined the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra in 2016.

Her performance of Yan River Capriccio in the ‘Debut Revisited – HKCO 40th Anniversary Concert’ in 2017 had won her a lot of critical acclaim. She is recognized for her rich performing experience, diversity as a musician, technical virtuosity, and insightful, elegant yet robust playing. She has given many solo recitals in Taipei, around Taichung and the southern part of Taiwan. Apsara Fantasy for yangqin and percussion is a work she commissioned Simon Kong Su Leong to compose for her.

Lee has performed many concerto pieces, such as Tianshan Love Song, Dragon Boat, Trilogy of Horses, Girl from Kroran and Rhapsody. She recorded for the original sound track of the film The Assassin in The Dance of Huji, as well as with the jazz group, Bazaar Mideast Jazz, in their album, The Persian Infusion.
