We are euphorically announcing our upcoming group show, "Tendering," opening December 1 from 6-9pm. The exhibition marks the gallery's official two year anniversary. The artist list will be revealed soon, an excerpt from the exhibition press release is below:
"Last year, we were standing in the center of Virtue Village's solo exhibition when a curator friend told us about vore—meaning "one that eats"—or vorarephilia, a rare fetish in which one fantasizes about being eaten. "But it is not a form of cannibalism," she corrected quickly. "It's more of a kink. The desire for someone to devour you whole."
There was something tender about the way our friend suggested. She used the words "devour" and "whole" as opposed to "eat" and "body." The distinctions were subtle but charged. We found ourselves empathizing with this image of someone being swallowed alive, how they might enjoy the external fullness of being, this material sensation that had nothing and everything to do with the political and social body. We imagined the relationship of eroticism to violence, of softness to pain, of beauty and the grotesque.
Love, hate, desire, disgust, birth, decay, death—are we perhaps waiting for some tenderness in all of this? Some vulnerability? When you find a bruise on your body, do you trace it with your finger? Do you feel those soft reverberations of pain and pleasure? Do they sing to you?
We invite you to explore "Tendering," the second group exhibition hosted at PHD Group which follows on from our inaugural show, "Rendering." Marking the gallery's two-year anniversary, the show and its roster of artists expresses tender growth and change."
