Now, the original English production of The Phantom of the Opera arrives in China, proudly presented by SMG Live and the Shanghai Musical Theatre Arts Center ( SMC ), in association with Crossroads Live ( North America ) and The Really Useful Group ( UK ). This version faithfully brings to life the iconic 1986 production originally staged by Cameron Mackintosh and The Really Useful Group.
The original production of The Phantom of the Opera refers to the classic version directed by Harold Prince, with musical staging and choreography by Gillian Lynne, and costume and set design by the legendary Maria Björnson.
Each performance features a team of over 130 members—including cast, crew, and a live pit orchestra—to ensure a production of textbook-level quality and grandeur worthy of the Paris Opera House. With more than 230 dazzling costumes and stunning makeup effects—all designed by Maria Björnson—the show transports audiences through 22 scene changes, averaging one every five minutes.
