The Blue Study Live - Volume 2, Chapter 3: The Scott Murphy Trio

When Scott Murphy first arrived in Hong Kong in 2018, his first professional engagement in the city came through an invitation from bassist Justin Siu. That initial collaboration quickly evolved into a lasting musical partnership. Joined by Justin's long-time collaborator and rhythmic anchor, Samuel Chan, the trio has since shared countless performances across an equally wide range of settings — from intimate listening rooms to high-energy stages — forging a deep musical rapport built on trust, spontaneity, and shared sensibility.

At this upcoming Blue Study Live, the trio presents a programme centred on original compositions by Scott Murphy. These works draw inspiration from his life journey: relocating from Scotland to Hong Kong, navigating the cultural contrasts of a new home, and more recently, embracing the profound transformation of becoming a new father. The music reflects these experiences with warmth, wit, and introspection, balancing lyricism with rhythmic vitality. Interwoven with these originals are a selection of swinging jazz standards — tunes that, in Scott's own words, are chronically underplayed — reimagined with freshness, conviction, and joy.

Scott Murphy has established himself as a distinctive voice on the saxophone, known for his warm tone, melodic clarity, and deep respect for the jazz tradition. Scott has collaborated with an impressive roster of internationally acclaimed artists spanning jazz and popular music, including Kendrick Scott, Will Vinson, Janek Gwizdala, Hins Cheung, George Lam, Billy Ocean, and Rubberband. His festival and concert appearances include the Hong Kong International Jazz Festival, Freespace Jazz Festival, as well as international stages such as the Montreux Jazz Festival, London Jazz Festival, Singapore Jazz Festival, and Borneo Jazz Festival, underscoring his wide-ranging presence across Asia and Europe.
