Yu Yuanchun is a professional Pipa teacher at the Central Conservatory of Music, where she is also the first-ever Pipa doctoral candidate ( enrolled in 2019 ). A former Pipa soloist with the China National Traditional Orchestra, she has also been recognized as a Guest Artist for UNESCO. Having studied the Pipa since childhood, she was mentored by Professor Zhou Xianshun, Professor Li Guanghua, and Professor Fan Wei, and has also received guidance from masters such as Lin Shicheng and Liu Dehai.
Yu has won gold and silver medals at major national competitions, including the Golden Bell Award for Music, the Wenhua Award, and the Taipei Concerto Competition. In 2012, she was named the Grand Champion of the CCTV Traditional Chinese Musical Instrument Contest. She is one of the most active and important performers of traditional Chinese music in China and on the world stage.
In recent years, her career as a Pipa virtuoso has taken her across the globe. She has been invited to perform as a soloist and principal player in over twenty regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Denmark, South Korea, Cuba, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Her performances have graced world-class stages such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Berliner Philharmonie.
