Capturing the Glorious Human Form: Captivating Contours

The human figure has long been the most inspirational subject in art. Its representation and exploration is diverse yet full of fun. Classical, modern and contemporary artists like Michelangelo, Klimt and Alice Neel created a legacy with their impactful depictions of the human form that opened our eyes, minds and souls.

Different kinds of beauty — regardless of age, body shape, outfit or charisma — expand and inspire different possibilities of representation and experimentation. This 10-lesson course will explore plenty of ways to represent and interpret the male and female forms by observing life models (clothed or nude), referencing photographs, and studying great works from the modern and contemporary periods.

Using pencil, charcoal, pastel and oil, students will:

- Explore and capture different possibilities of the human figure
- Acquire skills in illustrating the human form proportionally and expressively
- Apply colour in objective and subjective ways
- Use brushstroke to express rhythm and movement
- Employ elements such as lines, shapes, colour and texture to convey emotions and feelings
- Enhance observation and understanding of structure relative to angles and the composition of the human figure

Completed any Beginner-level painting short course at HKAC and have basic experience in drawing and sketching.
